A beautiful tale of positive mobs and our friend of the orange grove - a follow up to this chat. HSP in the house, my college graduation day unfolded wrapped in the peace of our friend of the orange grove. Through all the crowds, stadium packed in like sardines I took in all the beautiful interesting people as they walked past and all I felt was his peace. So I smiled and thanked him. That was the gift from our grove friend. The graduates filed in and it was time to begin the ceremony, one by one the protests began. Some Students yelled and walked toward the exits. Folks in the stand came down holding murder signs in the name of the college. But all was silent sans a few boos from the crowd. Silently this packed stadium waited, gave space for expression and interruption then they were gone. The Chancellor speaks “now let us begin” and the whole place erupts in joyous celebration for their loved ones. Some chants of USA. I thought of this write, about mobs and I choked up at this massive display of a joyous, loving, supportive “mob” that was all around. Not for themselves but those they loved and even a shared joy for a strangers loved one. They were silent as the divide happened, SILENT. That’s grace. The mob was good and it was something to behold. Displays of grace never get old. Nor hugs from orange grove friends.
I am very moved by your story. So much of the time, it feels like the angry voices are the majority, if only because they are loud/ frightening. Your experience is a beautiful example of a majority of silence waiting peacefully. I love your phrase “ gave space for expression and interruption. “ Sometimes that may be most peaceful,, powerful thing .
