I was so very glad to see you've arrived here on Substack, Susan! (I can't believe I missed it when it first happened, ghagh.) My brain has an awful lot to thank you for, after multiple re-reads of "Quiet" that taught me...well, *everything* about myself and the silence-seeking habits that recharge me and allow me to do the work I'm now doing, which I never learned to feel proud or even good about until you explained them so wisely. So, heartfelt thank you. Hope you're going to find a really colossal new audience of fans over here to match the one you have everywhere else.
Ha you missed it by maybe five minutes? We just launched, less than an hour ago! Thank you so much for the well-wishes. And, what is the work you're now doing?
Oh! Excellent - I'm so glad I haven't missed anything, then. :) I saw you had a few posts already up from November so I thought I missed the launch. (I came here via your main mailing list.)
Right now, I'm writing a newsletter about the science of curiosity, attention and wonder - have been doing so on here for a few years now. Although really it's just an excitable tour of my own bottomless ignorance about the latest science around these things, so I'm very much writing from the perspective of a student. So far, it's the most rewarding work of my writing career (I'm a former travel writer and archaeologist) and it involves a lot of reading books and science papers in quiet corners of coffee shops, so - again, thank you for helping me feel like I'm not weird for wanting to do that all day long.
all your interests - curiosity, attention, wonder, travel, archaeology, and of course days spent in coffee shops - are my interests too. Congratulations on the newsletter!
Also- here's a tender-hearted, true, very short story you didn't know you needed on a random Thursday in December. It shines a quiet light on goodness and well, I hope it moves you. When I shared it with my client, Actors Aimée Mullins and her husband, Rupert Friend, they cried. I crafted it as a personal love letter, but it is universal, too- for anyone who has needed a miracle.💫 We certainly need stories like this, with all that is happening in the world. My 6 min story starts 45 min into the recording: https://youtu.be/1FqxE46mUnQ Bless you and Happy Holidays!
It was such a long time ago that you may nor recall, (fifteen years?) but you rehearsed your first TED talk in our apartment on West End Avenue courtesy of mutual friend Adam Grant. I became that day a proud non-shy introvert. I owe you much gratitude for helping me explain myself to myself.
And Substack is the perfect medium for a non-shy introvert like me to write personal essays.
Of course I recall!! In fact, Adam told me years later that, after that disastrous rehearsal, he was privately worried that I wasn't going to pull off the talk. :) I went home that evening and rewrote the final third of the talk.
Anyway - it was very good of you to host, and a treat to meet you here all these years later. Glad you are writing, too!
Thank you for validating my perspective and demonstrating how melancholy is not depression. And in fact allows us to have a greater depth of experience than those who assume that a somber demeanor is a character flaw. Bless you!
Wonderful to have you here on Substack, Susan! I read your book Quiet many years ago and appreciated how thoughtful it was. My son adores your work and was excited to see you here too. 😊

So much more eloquently written than what's swirling around in my brain, which is basically "We're not worthy" Wayne & Garth gif. Welcome, Susan!
thank you, Beth!

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started at this New York airport
Aboard this tiny jet.
-
Gates was a mighty molesting man,
A gimper sick and queer.
Five pederasts took flight that day
For a three hour screw, a three hour screw.
-
The pedos started getting rough,
The tiny kid was tossed,
If not for the courage of the Disney crew
The Lolita would be lost, the Lolita would be lost.
-
The jet touched down on the shore of this secret tropic isle
With Jeffrey And Brunel too,
The Microsoft billionaire and his wife,
The movie stars
Paul Pelosi and Ghislai-anne
Here on Epstein's Isle.

Hello Susan!
Quiet has been for me - as for others- a game changer.
It turned me around from a questioner to an answerer to myself and to others.
How? It put a bottom to a barrel that was before reading Wuiet without a bottom.
And all of a sudden the echo of questions turned to answers and actions.
Not to continue on path of Self-doubt but to continue and path of manifestation of introversion and sensibility as valuable and important assests.
Quiet was and is a toolbox for grounding these assests and how to preserve and nurture them.
Thanks for the Gift of Quiet
Heard you over the summer as part of the Lumunos author series. Welcome to the Stack!
Thank you, Dee!

In Barrie Barton's book HOW TO MAKE A SPEECH (which I edited and published), we quote your speech about introverts. I absolutely love it!
So very glad you are here, Susan! I love your work. I re-read Bittersweet ALL the time....and faithfully subscribe to The Kindred newsletter.
