How to let go of being an "Admiration Addict" with a "Success Script"
Our Candlelight Chat on the Second Half of Life, with Chip Conley - here's the replay video!
Not long ago, I sent you a Kindred Letter about entering the Second Half of Life. That letter touched a gigantic nerve — so I knew we had to go deeper.
That’s why, a week ago Sunday, we came together for a Candlelight Chat with Chip Conley, the celebrated author of Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age, and the owner and host of the Modern Elder Academy (MEA).
That’s Chip’s official biography. But, as he told us on the call, his unofficial bio includes Chip’s foster son being charged with a crime, the suicides of five male friends — and a near-death experience, in which birds told him that if he could only slow down, he would see beauty and awe.
Chip was a fantastic guest - many of you commented that this was your favorite Candlelight Chat yet. To listen to our discussion, and much, much more, just hit the “play” button, below!
But first, here’s a taste of what we discussed:
*Twelve reasons life gets better with age;
*Why the states of “contentment” and “flow” are so important;
*What it means to let go of a “success script” and being an “admiration addict”;
*What it’s like to be a “social alchemist” with great public speaking skills — but also a constitutional introvert who needs a lot of personal space;
*Midlife challenges and “life-quakes”, such as empty nesting, caring for ailing parents, physical limitations, health changes, and the death of loved ones';
*A treasure trove of references to the work and books of others, including Dan Gilbert, Richard Rohr, Dacher Keltner, Laura Carstensen, Dean Simonton, Becca Levy, Margaret Mead, Arnold Van Janet, William Bridges, Joseph Campbell, Dan Pink, and Maya Angelou;
*The new “Map of Life”;
*Why Carl Jung said you can’t “live the afternoon of your life based upon the rules of the morning”;
*Why ritualizing endings is important, but often neglected in modern society (e.g., careers, divorce, menopause, empty nest);
and, believe it or not, more.
