“Sans Titre,” Tomie Ohtake, 1968

Dear You,

The other day, I woke up feeling nervous about some afternoon meetings. I knew that the meetings were in fact no big deal. I knew that I’d probably end up enjoying them. This knowledge was intellectually helpful but made little difference. From years of experience, I also knew that I had to just endure the unpleasant feelings, ‘til the meetings were over.

In the meantime, I sat there in bed and scrolled through my emails (which is of course the exact wrong thing to do when stressed).

But then, buried in one of those emails that I really shouldn’t have been reading, I came across one answer to why so many of us suffer social anxiety in the first place.
